You have entered a class that you will love endlessly, but also hate because theres that one kid that gets a nine on everything and you're still getting a six. This class will show you you're strengths, but it will also show you your weaknesses. You'll love yourself at some points, but also wonder what you're even doing with your life at others.
To start off the class, know that you're going to do well. If you try you're best, you'll be okay. I remember in the beginning of the class I saw people getting a point of two (sometimes more) than I did on a paper. It can get annoying, it can get frustrating, and it can get saddening. But don't fret, if you're working hard, you'll find your own way to succeed in this class. It isn't about beating out the other people. It's about finding your own way of thinking on your own time. It's about thinking about your thinking and finding a way to project that onto a piece of paper (or on the computer).
You'll learn about yourself in many ways. Your favorite type of writing, your style of writing, how much you can handle (or even your breaking point). You'll learn to be great. You'll even learn how to communicate ideas to people and how to show people your smarts. You'll learn the ropes of AP Lang by untying the rhetorical strategies the author utilizes to portray their message.
But, in all honesty, know that you're going to be okay. There are challenging moments. There are happy moments (sometimes). There are sad moments too. It's important to know that with everything you'll be fine. I can't tell you how many times I looked at something I wrote and knew it wasn't my best piece of writing. But, I also can't tell you how many times I looked at something I wrote and felt so proud of it. There will be moments that you love in this class, and there will be moments that you hate. But there will never be a moment where you don't learn something. Whether it be about the class, or about yourself. This class is about learning. What you learn, is up to you.
Sincerely,
Michael (also known as Liam)
